Description
Haiti, Port-au-Prince, Street Railroad, US Occupation Real Photo Postcard. Divided back, unused, circa 1915, AZO stamp block, light smudging-fading, some corner & edge wear. Average to good condition for age. Item #011620157172Between 1911 and 1915, a series of political assassinations and forced exiles saw the presidency of Haiti change six times. Various revolutionary armies carried out this series of coups. Each was formed by cacos, or peasant brigands from the mountains of the north, along the porous Dominican border, who were enlisted by rival political factions under the promises of money, which would be paid after a successful revolution, and the opportunity to plunder.
The first American occupation of Haiti began on July 28, 1915, when 330 U.S. Marines landed at Port-au-Prince on the authority of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson to safeguard the interests of U.S. corporations. The first invasion forces however already had debarked from USS Montana on January 27, 1914. The occupation ended on August 1, 1934 after Franklin D. Roosevelt reaffirmed an August 1933 disengagement agreement. The last contingent of U.S. Marines departed on August 15, 1934 after a formal transfer of authority to the Garde.
Note American sailors on the train.
Probably a very rare postcard.
We sell only original postcards, no reproductions. Most are from 1905 to 1925, but occasionally newer cards if they are good. Since these cards have been stored in various situations for the past 80 to 100 years, they typically will have some fading, some edge & corner wear, most corners may be rounded some, some light creases or slight bends. Many cards will have some postal ink on the image side from being postmarked. Our description above will list any significant defects that may detract from the collectability of the card. We have been in the antique postcard business for over 20 years and are not fly by night. If we fail to list any major defect we will refund your money + postage for you to return it. Our cards are sent in hard plastic sleeves that prevent most postal damage. Please email if you have questions about payment options.
